The bitter truth about sweet drinks

As the temperature starts soaring in various part of the world, so does the consumption of sugary drinks.

Soft drinks, energy drinks and sports drinks become an easy choice in the warmer months due to their taste, convenience and availability. However, they can be quite addictive due to the caffeine in some of them and the sugar in all of them. These drinks also fall amongst foods that contain the highest number of ‘empty calories’.

What are ‘empty calories’? Simply put, they are calories from solid fats and/or added sugars.

Why are they called ‘empty’? Because they provide little or no nutrition.
